Reasons for Installing a Decorative Concrete Driveway

Blog

If you're looking for a paving option for a driveway, why not consider decorative concrete? Here are several benefits of this popular paving option.

Design Options

Concrete is a versatile material that can be treated to create different looks. For example, you could install standard grey concrete. Another option is integrally coloured concrete, whereby pigments are mixed into the cement before it's poured. This will allow you, for instance, to install a dark charcoal driveway in front of a pale beige house. Or else, you could lay a dusky red driveway with the baked-clay earth look found in many parts of Australia. You can also produce patterns using different colours. To do this, contractors lay a paper stencil over hardened cement. They then apply colours which only affect the concrete that is not hidden under the stencil.

Textures

Another decorative option is texture. Indents and grooves can be moulded into the concrete by pressing stamps onto the cement before it dries. Many different stamping mats are available to mimic substances like stone pavers or timber planks. Another textured paving option is sawn-cut concrete, in which hard concrete is carved into shapes. These texturing methods can be combined with colour. Your driveway can then imitate bluestone or brick pavers, for example. Unlike pavers, however, you won't have to worry about weeds sprouting between each one.

Safe

Concrete driveways form safe, non-slip surfaces. The more textured the paving is, the more traction it provides and the safer it will be. So stamped and saw-cut concrete will keep your family and friends safer. Additionally, gritty additives can be added to the sealant to increase traction.

Low Maintenance

Concrete driveways are low-maintenance. Besides regular sealing, they don't require much work. All the concrete may need is a sprinkle with a garden hose to keep it clean. The colours and textures of decorative concrete camouflage grease and oil stains in any case. Plus, the sealant will help to prevent staining, and it will shield the concrete from the elements so that it lasts longer.

Thus, decorative concrete driveways provide numerous benefits. You can colour and texture them to coordinate with the house and landscape. Textures also increase traction, making your property safer. Plus, you won't have to worry about a lot of maintenance once you seal the decorative concrete according to the recommended timetable. Nor will you have to be bothered with weeds creating a messy look.
